After choosing the project site as Balaju Industrial area, I had to visit the place for the data collection. I was afraid to go for data collection alone. and i know that my fear of what would happen if i go for data collection alone in that industrial area, whether the people over there would allow me to enter their industries, understand their cases or not had really made me nervous. At first I went to the management committee and i was glad for good response. Now the turn was for the industries. First industry i went was related to plastic,,,,no good result. Second, I went to Dairy Corporation. Good response but they dont have much to tell me...haha. But i got a good case study over there. the people were highly cooperative. there were employees associations related with three parties, UML, Maoist and Congress and there was a common team Union, NO elections for CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). In Nepal, from the government to industries, everything is run only through consensus. Unfortunately, I wanted to meet the Presidents of the Unions (employee Unions) and they were not available. there was strike once but there was no lockout over there.
So I went to the oldest industry of that area. The industry though was oldest had no union at all. there was a worker representative and everyone was hired on contract basis only. there was no permanent worker in that area. the salary was given as defined by the government. There was no such thing as collective bargaining. THe ultimate decision power was hold by the management only. I talked with one worker who was working over there since 18 years. the workers were happy that the promotion was on the basis of work efficiency.
